Holiday Boating Safety Tips

June 25, 2023

The busiest times on the water are soon approaching, so here are some tips and tricks to stay safe while still having a great time on the water!

Number 1- The Importance of Life Jackets
Life jackets save lives! Make sure to have a life jacket that fits properly for all the passengers on board. Drowning is the main cause of death when it comes to boating accidents. Life jackets will position you face up allowing your airways to be clear from any water.
Number 2- Be Safe When Tubing and Skiing
It is important to be seen when falling off while tubing or skiing. Wearing a bright life jacket and waving your hands in the air will let you be seen by other boats while waiting to get picked back up.
Number 3- Sit in the Recommended Seating Areas
When the lakes get the busiest it can get very bumpy very quickly. It is important to sit in the recommended areas listed on the boat sticker. All it takes is one wrong turn in rough water to be tossed out of the boat.
Number 4- Pay Attention to Idle Zones
Paying attention to the buoys in front of you will save you headaches in the long run. DNR is out and about every weekend and especially during the holidays. Follow the rules and speed limits to save yourself from getting a ticket and ruining your day on the lake.
Number 5- Wear Your Kill Switch
If there were to ever be an accident, the kill switch is key to saving lives. The kill switch will shut the motor off and stop the prop from turning. In an accident the driver can get thrown out of the boat and without the kill switch the boat will keep running down the lake. Attach the kill switch to your life jacket so you never forget.
Number 6- Don’t Drink and Drive
Engaging in drinking while operating a boat leads to dangerous situations for the individuals in your boat and the other boaters on the water. Be safe and boat sober.
Number 7- Beware of Fireworks
The 4th of July is approaching and that means lots of fireworks. It is important to stay back from launching fireworks and to never launch fireworks from your vessel.
