Opportunities for Safe Boating Classes May and June 2022
Free Boater Safety Training Courses:
• Friday May 6th, 6p-8p
• Thursday May 19th, 6p-8p
• Friday June 3rd, 6p-8p
Location: Geist Marina Showroom
The course will be led by the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary covering the following topics:
- Boat regulations
- Parts of the boat
- Passing other boaters
- Life Jackets/PFDs
- Safety in and out of the boat
- Basic documents for your boat
- Vessel Examinations
- Boating checklist
- Weather
- Radios, navigation aids
This will be an informal Q & A course focusing on lakes and rivers, and is geared toward beginner boaters wanting a quick orientation to basic boater safety. No certifications are associated with attending this course.

Boat America is a boating certificate class that offers an in-depth and interesting boating safety course, and provides the knowledge needed to obtain a boating certificate. Some insurance companies will also offer discounts on boating insurance to boaters who successfully complete this course. This class will be tailored to Geist Reservoir.
TOPICS INCLUDE
• Introduction to Boating – Types of power boats, boating vocabulary, sailboats, paddle boats, powering boats, and engine types.
• Boating Law – Boat registration, regulations, hull identification numbers, required safety equipment, Federal boating law, state boating law, and reporting accidents.
• Safety Equipment – Life jackets, fire extinguishers, sound-producing devices, visual distress signals, anchors, and other safety equipment.
• Safe Operation and Navigation – Buoys and beacons, aids to navigation, navigation rules, docking, and the dangers of alcohol on the water.
• Boating Emergencies – Hypothermia, boating accidents, man overboard, capsizing, emergency radio calls, carbon monoxide dangers, and weather.
• Trailering – Types of trailers, lights, hitches, towing a trailer.
• Sports and Boating – Water-skiing, hunting and hunting gear, PWC operation, and other boating tips.

• 8 x10 Certificate
• Wallet Sized Card
